October has always been known for it’s scary ghosts and goblins that run around at the end of the month. But after reading all of the news of late that is happening this election year in the states, that’s what is scary!!!
Here is an example: U.S Rep. Paul Broun said in an address last month “I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old,” Broun said in the speech, “I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says." In his speech to the church group, Broun called the Bible the “the manufacturer’s handbook. … It teaches us how to run all of public policy and everything in our society.” “That’s the reason, as your congressman, I hold the holy Bible as being the major directions to me of how I vote in Washington, D.C., and I’ll continue to do that,” he said. So how is this any different than the Taliban who hold their book as close and he does????
I am sorry, but I am a geologist, I have studied many aspects of the earth for many years and from everything I was taught, the earth is a bit older than 9,000 years, try 4.5 billion years!
Broun, a medical doctor by training, serves on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Oh yeah, Todd Akin is also on the same committee in the house, the one who said that RAPE was legal.
Here something even scarier!!! The Gallup Poll has been tracking Americans’ views on creation and evolution for 30 years. In June, it released its latest findings, which showed that 46% of Americans believed in creationism, 32% believed in evolution guided by God, and 15% believed in atheistic evolution,
I really thought that the dark ages was over like in the 1500’s, but I guess that there is a new resurgence to revert to those dark times.
I think that religion is just fine as long as it does not govern mankind in the way it is being used by these folks who get elected to public office. If you remember way back when in 1919 the Volstead Act was just one of those things that prohibited drinking liquor because it was sinful. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union pledged not only to ban alcohol and drugs, but to improve public morals. The anti-Saloon League was formed in 1893 and eventually became a powerful political force in passing a national ban on alcoholic beverages.
Scary?? Yes, but at the same time very sad. This is the 21st century, right?? The First Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof …."
So much for my soap boxing, now back to the real things in life. September was a weird month too, we had more rain than normal (4 inches) and more wind than normal. It really put the kibosh on snorkeling. Usually it is calm and quiet. People who have lived here all there lives could not believe it.
Well, I hope for better and brighter times a head, pura vida!
