A Visit from the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica

Wednesday we had a group from the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica come and talk to us here in Puerto Viejo about the Blue Morpho Butterfly.  The main part of the program was to introduce ways of making sure it survives.  As part of this program, the Museo provided free plants to those who showed interest and came by to plant them for you and explain how each plant played its part in the life cycle of the Morpho.  We were provided with four different species of plants Thursday afternoon.  It rained later that night!!!!!!

planting 2 Providing the helping hand!!! I asked if there was a program like this for the Pacific side, he replied that there was no interest unlike here in the Caribe Sur.

planting1 Making sure the tree is properly planted.

guaba

Guaba de Chilillo (monkey tail) This tree acts as host for the Morpho to lay its eggs.

chaperno       chaperno

Chaperno is like the lilac bush.  This provides a place for the larva and chrysalis to mature.

       matanasomatasano

Matasano (white sapote) this fruit provides food for the Morpho, very sweet.  Also the monkeys love this fruit.

manzana de aguamansana

Mansana de Agua (water apple) provides food for the Morpho as it drops from the tree and spoils.

Of course this won’t happen over night, but you have to start sometime..

Pura Vida!!!

Crusing til the rain returns

For a rain forest it sure has been really dry lately.  Since the beginning of August we have only had about 6 inches of rain, normally we have around 20 inches.  We are waiting for November to come and bring back the rain.  I know a lot of people don’t like the rain much but it sure does make things nice and clean.  No more dusty roads, no more dead leaves falling from the trees and very few tourist.

I only have a few small things left to do on the deck before I can call it completely finish, but I am close.  The deck added an additional 137 sq ft of outdoor living space and by American standards it was fairly inexpensive.  My sweat equity was small.

It sure is nice to be able to site in the early morning and watch the birds and sloths as they make their rounds finding food.  A humming bird has decided to make a nest in the avocado tree I wanted to move so that will have to be put off for a month or two.

We can only hope that the rains return soon, a lot of folks are really tired of the water rationing or not having water at all.  The river next to us is a small trickle of water when normally it is flowing.  Asi es la vida!

Pura vida!!!…………..

Spooky Time Again

Hard to believe it is October already, frost will soon be on the pumpkins, but wait we don’t have pumpkins or frost!!!  Ok, that’s better. Last month was a whirlwind of things, finally finished the deck, got the car inspected and went to get my residency renewed for two more years.  Needless to say the car passed inspection and my brand new cedula arrived in the mail Monday so we will be legal for another two years!!!!  I was worried that they might not renew since they said I needed a letter from a bank stating I changed the allotted amount of dollars into colones, even though I had a bag of bank receipts showing that exchange.  But now since the rules to the game have changed once again, this is no longer required.  It’s hard to keep up with moving targets sometimes.

September was also the second driest month in the past ten years (2003).  Water rationing and dry wells are the norm now, at least our well is doing fine it pays to live close to a river, although the river is just a trickle.  Our average temperature was 27.5 C which is a degree higher that normal.  Global warming???  Perhaps, but if we don’t get rain soon, a lot of plants will wither away.

IMG_8392 Just a few small things left to do, but pretty much done.  Now if we could only get rid of our noisy neighbors this would be the perfect place all the time to enjoy the nature.  Much better than the screaming, fighting, yelling, crying and barking dogs we have to deal with now.  I am sure not all Europeans are this disrespectful, but these guys take the cake!!!  One can only hope that they move on to bother someone else soon!

IMG_8390 Today’s sun rise so it looks like another HOT day ahead!
